Adam Yauch of famous rap group the Beastie Boys has passed away from cancer at just 47 years old.
His publicist released a statement today.
"It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam 'MCA' Yauch ... passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old."
The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month, but Yauch couldn't make it due to his illness. During that time he released a statement about his condition.
"Hello My Friends - while I'm grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated...I'm continuing treatment, staying optimistic, and hoping to be cancer free in the near future."
Adam was well known to the Dalai Lama, whom he met with several times while being ill. He was blessed by the Dalai Lama last July. A rep for the Dalai Lama had this to say.
"Adam had helped us raise awareness on the plight of the Tibetan people by organizing various freedom Tibet concerts and he will be remembered by his holiness and the Tibetan people."
Adam, along with Mike D and Ad Rock, founded the Beastie Boys in 1979 in New York City.

Whitney Houston's family are devastated following the publication of a photo of her lying dead in her casket.
They've had “their heart broken all over again” after the photo was taken during a private wake for Whitney on the eve of the funeral at Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey.
Whitney's family reportedly has no idea who took the photo, but are wondering how security was breached. Some people have pointed fingers at the funeral people, to which owner Carolyn Whigham vehemently denies.

Bobby Brown is reporedly “in and out of crying fits” at the news of his ex-wife Whitney Houston's untimely passing.
Brown is currently in Mississippi, where his band New Edition are set to perform tonight. He reportedly still intends on getting on-stage and performing the whole show.
A relative said Brown was “shattered and devastated” but made sure to get in touch with family members.
“He wanted to tell everyone about it before it hit the news. He didn't want any of us to hear about it on television.”
Houston and Brown were married for 14 years and had a famously tumultuous relationship which centred around copious drug use and domestic violence charges. They have one daughter, 18 year old Bobby Kristina.
Emergency services were called to the Beverly Hilton Hotel at 3.43pm, as security staff were attempting to revive her. She was pronounced dead at 3.55pm.

Here we go again. The internet is going crazy with reports that actor Eddie Murphy is dead. He isn't.
While “RIP Eddie Murphy” is still trending on Twitter, TMZ says they've made some calls and can confirm that he is very much alive.
The rumour kicked off after website MediaFetcher.com wrote a story saying he had passed away. MediaFetcher.com is a “celebrity hoax generator”, which creates random stories claiming celebs have passed away, or other crazy rumours. These have been responsible for other celebrity death hoaxes, including Jeff Goldblum, Tiger Woods and George Clooney.

No illegal drugs were found in Amy Winehouse when she died, according to her family.
The news will come as a shock to everyone as Amy publically battled drugs and booze.
Ironically on her last tour in Serbia the singer was booed as a very visibly drunk Amy staggered around the stage.
Winehouse died in her London apartment on July 23.
