Nine Confirms Underbelly To Return For A Third Series Posted by ScandalAnt 12 June, 2009 - 1:35 PM

Nine has officially announced Underbelly will hit the small screen for a third time. But quality-starved TV viewers will want to know if Underbelly: The Golden Mile and its focus on police corruption with the backdrop of Sydney's seedy red light district, Kings Cross, will make up for the anti-climax of the second series.

The announcement has been made at an opportune time, with a fresh underworld war brewing.

Filming starts later in the year for the third series which kicks-off in 1989, when Kings Cross was run by the unholy alliance of bent cops and criminals.

Up until now, Underbelly has largely focused on figures that were already dead. So ScandalAnt reckons the 64 million dollar question is: How will the show avoid legal hassles getting to air when it plans to portray living members of the community?

According to a Nine statement: "Strippers, gamblers, gunmen, dealers, bouncers, bagmen – they all came to the Golden Mile."

"A smart and sexy young Kim Hollingsworth, smiling teenage Kings Cross identity Johnny Ibrahim, the Bayeh Brothers, Trevor Haken, Chook Fowler...the Golden Mile was their playground, and they played like there was no tomorrow," the statement says.

"Then, in 1995, 'tomorrow' came and the Wood Royal Commission cleaned out the Black Empire within the NSW Police. But it left behind a mess that took years of mayhem to bring under control."

Ibrahim's brother Fadi was shot five times, and his girlfriend once, when ambushed by a gunman last week as they sat in a black Lamborghini.

A Nine spokeswoman wouldn't tell ScandalAnt who will star in the new series, but offered a hit: "If you watch the last episode in the last series, you can speculate and draw your own conclusions from that."
