Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Isabel Lucas and Josh Duhamel.

Life for Sam Witwicky has returned to as normal after his role in the battle to save Earth from the evil Decepticons. He is about to head to college leaving his sultry girlfriend, his obnoxious parents and his beloved Autobot Camaro behind. He soon discovers his normal existence is soon to be shattered as he once again takes on the Decpticons with a little help from the Autobots and a secret division of the U.S Military.

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' has promised to be one of the biggest films of the year. It has an enormous budget, a huge promotional push and hands down the best film preview of the year. If you like your films to be big, bold and dumb, you won't be disappointed. It is probably the biggest and it is definitely the dumbest film of the year.

For those that enjoyed 2007's 'Transformers' there is plenty to look forward to in 'Revenge of the Fallen'. There is more of the same from the first film, but this time everything is super-sized. There are more explosions than Pearl Harbour and Armageddon put together, more fights than entire back catalogue of Rocky films and more gunfights than all of the War films made in the last decade.

The plot of the film, which defies logic on so many levels, is really just aimed at pushing the action along. It actually seems absurd the producers have pressed the running time out to nearly three hours when they could have comfortably made two films for the price of one, but with twice the box office revenue.

The length of the film is one of the major problems with the film, but the greatest is the film's reliance on clichés. Director Michael Bay (who directed the aforementioned Armageddon and Pearl Harbour and the Bad Boys films) seems intent on cramming every single corny action film cliché into the film as possible. There is the sexy seductress, countless scenes in super slow motion, a ridiculously overbearing soundtrack and main characters that spit out some of the silliest lines imaginable.

Just in case all the action in the film was not enough to get millions of teenage boys to the cinema, Bay has made sure the girls will. The first shot we see of Megan Fox the camera follows her body in a way that would make the editor of Ralph magazine blush. Aussie girl Isabel Lucas is given the same treatment. The two of them pout and flaunt their way through the film with no obvious purpose but to provide eye candy for the boys.

The girls in the audience are at least given eye candy in the form of Shia LaBeouf and 'Mr Fegie' Josh Duhamel. LaBeouf seems perfectly suited to these types of roles after his breakthrough performance as Sam in the first film.

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' has  full on action, a complete lack of plot and childish humour (a robot dog humping the legs of humans,  Sam's Mum acting loopy after eating Hash cookies). It will primarily appeal to teenage boys and anyone willing to turn off their brain between the candy bar and their seat.

As silly as 'Revenge of the Fallen' is, there are probably worse ways to spend a cold winter's night.

Three out of Five Stars.
