Legendary blues and soul singer Etta James sadly passed away this morning at the age of 73 of complications from leukaemia, and her death has sent shockwaves through the music community.

Beyonce, who played James in the 2008 movie Cadillac Records, released a statement expressing her sadness at the news.

“This is a huge loss,” she wrote. “Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime.”

A stack of other stars have also spoken on Twitter about the news.

“RIP Etta James. One of the greatest voices of all time,” tweeted Nathan Followil of the Kings of Leon. “Thanks for the many romantic moments your music created.”

Kelly Rowland tweeted: “CLASSIC. ONE OF A KIND. PURE SOUL. ETTA JAMES! Thank You for gracing us with your incredible talent & presence! (sic)”

Rihanna: “#DearEtta may you rest in peace.”

Actress Jessica Alba tweeted, “Rip EttaJames u r (sic) a legend and 1 of my all time favs -thank you for giving us all the gift of song -what a voice!”

Etta passed away at a hospital in Riverside, California, where she was taken on Thursday night. James' son Donto said he and his brother got to say goodbye in a very special way.

"It's been quite a day,” Donto, 43, said, "but I'm very grateful. She basically passed in my arms, and I was able to share everything I needed to say to her, from praying to listing her accomplishments as a mother."
