What Makes a Parade a Parade?! Posted by Hamish & Andy 19 September, 2008 - 3:59 PM

400x248-handa-parade

After watching the Olympian parades this week we wanted to know exactly what makes a parade? Why is a parade different from a march? What is the worst parade you have ever seen?

Hrmmm I'm just taking a wild guess, but i think a "Parade" is festive, more like a massive party (e.g. Mardi Gras), and a "March" is more for rememberance of a person or event e.g. Anzac Day).

Wikipedia seems to think they're the same thing :P Also, I think marches are for like a specific cause or issue and a parade is a celebration for something. Plus marches are also when people are actually "marching" and parades don't usually involve marching (I think).

A ridiculous amount of confetti, streamers, sparkle, and colour- not unlike our famed Mardi Gras.....
bring it campy-or go home...i think thats the general message of a parade.

This is what Wikipedia says. A parade (also called march or march past) is a procession of people, usually organized along a street, often in costume, and often accompanied by marching bands, floats or sometimes large balloons. Parades are held for a wide range of reasons, but are usually celebrations of some kind. In Britain the term parade is usually reserved for either military parades or other occasions where participants march in formation; for celebratory occasions the word procession is more usual. In the Canadian Forces the term also has several less formal connotations.

apparently if u walk in a straight line that's a parade. our teachers got me and my friends in trouble coz we were walking in a straight line coz we were bored. they said that it was annoying and dumb and to stop PARADING through the school. that was coming from a teacher that wants everything perfect and in order. COME ON TEACHERS!!! WE WERE WALKING IN ORDER!!!!!

I think a parade is for the audience/crowd to celebrate something or someones excellence wheras a march is for the people that are marching- a march signifies royalty and rememberance....I love you guys heaps listen 2 ya everyday on the podcasts cos 92.9 don't work in the country xoxo

I think its when like a load of people walk down a street with floats and stuff, and a band and stuff, with trumpets, why do you want to know again?
PS: I don't know what the difference is, i think that a march is just some army guys forwarding marching!
PSS: If you guys want to make a parade of your own, you guys should go at the front, Andy you can play the trumpet and hamish can sing. Hamish will be a bit sad, but still funny.

To me, a march is when people are all walking in unison like a band or soldiers. and a parade is when people are not walking in unison.
