i’ve never done a single radio or broadcasting course – take that aftrs/nida/waapa people!

back in 2002, 92.9 were trying to find someone new for on air and i put my hand up only to get down to the final 3 and then have my hopes/dreams/desires smashed apart in front of perth! so they gave me a gig driving around the promo vehicles and i just worked my way up thru the ranks*

my boss at the time put me on weekends, only to hear that i sucked the big ones and took me off before my shift had even ended! 18 months learning how to talk and push buttons at the same time got me the night time gig and i did that for a couple of years interviewing some of the biggest names back then: tina cousins, eamon and jeremy gregory.

then i uprooted and moved to melbourne and worked with hamish and andy for a couple of months until i was offered the hot30 countdown. high point of that time was grabbing an interview with richard branson at the melbourne open, low point was working as a door to door salesman for 2 days trying to earn enough money to live.

the sydney leg of my life so far has been fantastic and job-wise even better. so many fun times on air, crazy stunts, overseas trips = the best job ever!

*tip to anyone trying to get into the biz is take a lower rung job and work your way up

Biggzy

I studied Theatre and Film at uni (I thought I wanted to be an actress, sorta still do) while I figured out how I was going to support myself financially with a real job. I answered an ad in a uni paper for volunteer announcers at 2RPH in Sydney and became a volunteer at the Radio for the Print Handicapped, which was rewarding and loads of fun.

Got my first commercial radio gig as a promotions mole handing out icy cold flavoured milks on the Central Coast of NSW before promoted to breakfast producer and then made redundant. Awesome.

I landed my dream job of producer and co-host of the Hot30 and been here ever since. Best job ever.

Pingas - Producer

As a teenager I was an obsessed Hot30 fan, it was my dream to work on the show and be like Ugly Phil & Jackie O. So I began work for several community radio stations (Hitz FM Melbourne, KISS FM Melbourne, SYN FM Melbourne etc) as an on air announcer, newsreader, panel op, producer & voice artist.

I then made my move to commercial radio and worked as a phone bitch for TTFM’s “Melbourne’s Most Wanted” with Andy Grace (now Mix FM). After a year, I joined Austereo and became a Community Switchboard volunteer for FOX FM & Triple M Melbourne to get my foot in the door. I eventually joined the Black Thunders & Triple M street team, while working as a station receptionist and voiceover artist.

I then got my first big producing gig with Hamish & Andy for 2 years, I also worked on other shows like “Rove Live Radio”, “Pete’s Show” with Peter Helliar, “The Arvo” with Peter Helliar & Judith Lucy and “Australian First”. I then moved to Brisbane to work on the B105 Breakfast Show with “Labby, Camilla & Stav”. After 3 years I gave up breakfast hours to work nights on the Hot30 Countdown with Tim Lee & Biggzy. Yay!

Web Guy - Online Content Producer

I initially wanted to work in marketing or advertising as some sort of creative person, so I studied marketing and advertising at UTS (University of Technology, Sydney), and really got into the interwebs whilst I was studying.

The week before my last ever uni exam (I graduated, by the way), I landed a job in the online department at a top-notch advertising agency, but after a year I realised that being a "Mad Man" was not for me.

Took a punt at a web designer role for this radio station, and now my job description keeps changing. I now know how to shoot and edit video, take photos on an SLR camera, write articles online and talk on the wireless!
