Liberty Swing For Red Hill Appeal Posted by Haylie Price 8 October, 2009 - 2:51 PM

POLL TALLY

The donations tally is currently at $70,455. B105 would like to thank everyone that donated. It's not too late to make an online donation at the Variety QLD website: http://www.varietyqld.org.au

What Is A Liberty Swing?
Visits to the local playground as a child are cherished memories for most of us; however, the simple pleasure of swinging through the air was never an option for children in wheelchairs until the Australian invention of the Liberty Swing.

The Liberty Swing allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to enjoy the pure fun and exhilaration of a swing.

Young people in wheelchairs rarely gain the opportunity to independently swing in a playground along with their peers. The Liberty Swing instills a level of confidence and acceptance for children as they gain the opportunity to play along with their friends and family.

A Swing Needed For Red Hill

Variety Queensland together with Red Hill Special School have identified the need for a Liberty Swing to be placed in Woolcock Park, next door to the school, to be accessed by the special school students and other wheelchair bound children in the community.

Red Hill Special School teaches 35 school age children students with most requiring specialised health support and 42 children 0 – 5 years enrolled in the Early Childhood Intervention Program. At least thirty five (35) of theses children are in wheelchairs. As the school is based on the side of a hill, Woolcock Park is utilised as an extension of the School.

The Cost

The Liberty Swing costs $25,000 plus installation costs of approximately $13,000. The total cost is expected to be $38,000.

What You Can Do

Labby, Camilla and Stav are asking you to join with them in helping to raise the $38,000 needed for the Liberty Swing.

I am a Variety Qld Volunteer, last year we also helped out the Red Hill Special School and managed to fundraise $60,000 to pay for a bus to transport the children around. I was lucky enough to meet some of the kids from Red Hills Special School, the momories from this moment will be with me forever. This cause is so well worth it and i thank B105 so much for helping these kids out. With a disabled family member, i know what it means to the children and to the parents to see their children happy and smiling. Please everyone keep up the hardwork.

    Hi B105,

I was immediately touched by the liberty swing, what a fantastic idea.
I used to be a support worker for the disabled in child care years ago and now I run a mobile beauty service, so helping those with a disability is close to my heart.
I have donated $50 and will be facebooking people today to try and get some more donations.

    Keep up the good work!

It is a child's basic right to play on swing! Great work. Keep it up. We all take basic things for granted

    Cheers

    WOW that is amazing.....$70,455.

I am so happy to have donated to this cause. I was in tears when I was listening to the familys talk about their loved one & how much they would love to see the joy come from this giant swing. I have a daughter myself & couldn't begin to imagine the life these kids have to lead in a wheelchair, anything that we can do to make them smile is a wonderful thing :-)

    GREAT WORK!

hi labby, camilla and stav. i am a mother of a 2 yr old able boy and couldnt imagine what it would be like if my child couldnt play. it is such a great cause i was in tears hearing the different parents tell their story about their child/ children.
You said on the radio that most of the parks have got chip bark and it make it hard for wheelchair of even pram access. i was thinking maybe u could use the extra money to put a CEMENT PATHWAY to the LIBERTY SWING to make it easier for the children to get acess the swing. i have seeen Liberty Swings in other towns and still there is chipbark all around them and it would make it hard.
Keep up with all the great work that u all do.

Congratulations on raising so much money on the greatly needed Liberty Swing. I work for a Disability organisation and know that this will be well used by the families who are currently accessing our services.

Can you please let us know when you think the swing will be installed?

Also, since almost double the target amount was raised, have you got plans to install another Liberty Swing elsewhere in Brisbane? I know that it is incredibly difficult for families with a disabled child to travel very far and so it would be fantastic if another swing was available for children on the South Brisbane side too.

    Well done again!
